Cooking Dinner
Every Wednesday evening, Tom takes responsibility for cooking dinner for his whole family, since his parents both work late on that day. He usually starts preparing around five o'clock, right after he finishes his homework and puts his books away.
First, Tom washes the vegetables carefully and cuts them into small, even pieces on a wooden cutting board. Then he puts rice in a pot with water and lets it cook slowly while he heats some chicken in a pan with olive oil and his favorite spices. He always tastes the food while cooking to make sure the flavors are just right.
While the food finishes cooking, Tom sets the table with plates, forks, and glasses, and he calls his younger sisters to come and wash their hands. His sisters always ask for extra sauce, and Tom happily gives it to them because he enjoys seeing them smile. When everyone finishes eating, the whole family works together to clean the kitchen, washing dishes and wiping the counters. Tom says that cooking dinner is not just a chore for him; it is a way of bringing his family closer together at the end of a busy day.
